All About The Small Space Garden

Hello Small Space Garden Fans!

My name is Wakeman, let me tell you about the small space garden, and why I started this website. See I’ve been digging in the dirt since before I can remember, and here’s the thing. I like small gardens, furthermore I like helping people out.

So Who Am I?

Like I said my name is Wakeman and I like to garden. I mostly prefer vegetable gardens because, well I like to eat. I’ve kept all sorts of gardens, big, small, raised, hanging, square foot, hydroponic, in pots, in the ground. After all this time I’ve come to realize that (and I hate to admit this) I’m a lazy gardener. What’s more, being lazy, I think small gardens are awesome.

Why are small gardens awesome?

Well here are just a few reasons. The small space garden can be installed just about anywhere. You can put one on a patio, or on an apartment balcony, hell you can even break up a much larger space with a bunch of small gardens.

Not only that, they can be VERY budget friendly, they don’t really require all the big equipment a large garden does. Just think about what they are for a minute. By the very nature of being a small space garden they don’t require a big yard so there’s savings. Speaking of budget friendly, your small garden can be in pots, raised beds, or even planted directly in the ground.

You can use almost anything you want for pots, pretty ceramic pots to 5 gal buckets it doesn’t matter. Not only that your raised beds can be fancy or plain. Shoot I was into hydroponic gardening for a while and built a raised bed hydroponic garden from salvaged gutters. What does tell you? Old bricks make attractive low cost pathways if you decide to plant your small garden in the ground.

Not only that, but a small garden takes less time to keep up (remember I’m lazy). What’s more, if it’s a vegetable garden you can get a surprising amount of food from a small garden (I like to eat). Ever heard of square foot gardening? And yes it is possible to feed yourself from an apartment balcony.

Why Did I Start The Small Space Garden?

The reason is simple. Helping people makes me smile. When I first started scuffling in the dirt I had all kinds of questions. I still do and I’m sure you do too. I mean from a gardening standpoint I doubt we’re all that different.

Maybe, you’re looking for some small space garden design ideas. For instance, what do you put in a small garden? Or how do you make a small garden look bigger? Even what can I use instead of grass in my backyard.

The answer to that last one is pretty much anything.  Let me just put it out there, (and please don’t think I’m a heretic but) I’m not a big fan of grass. As far as I’m concerned, unless you have small kids or you play a lot of sports, you’re better off taking that big backyard and breaking it up into a series of small gardens.

Could be you’re trying to find the best garden tool for a certain task. You know, things like. What’s the best type of pruning shear anvil or bypass? Or, who makes the best trowel for container gardens?

Perhaps you’re wondering about garden soil, and how to amend the soil in a raised garden bed. Or what’s the ratio of vermiculite to compost to peat moss in a square foot garden bed, that sort of thing.

What Is The Small Space Garden All About

That’s pretty easy to answer. It’s about both of us learning more about gardening. You learning by reading every new post and review, and me learning by writing them.

Keep checking back. I’ve got a lot of really helpful stuff to post. If you’re too busy with your own gardens I can always let you know when a new article hits the site.
